The vast majority of insurers in Australia have entered into a voluntary code of practice with the Insurance Council of Australia.
Current General Insurance Code of Practice
This code has the aim of improving customer service in the insurance industry by means of self-regulation. It contains standards of service including:
Time frames for claims decisions and updates
Behaviour of insurer appointed service suppliers
Requirements when denying a claim
Responsibility for workmanship
Behaviour during catastrophes
Complaint and dispute processes
